Jane Lau Bi Yien

Jane Lau graduated from the University of Malaya in 2023 with LL.B (Hons.) (First Class Honours).

During her university days, she played a significant role in the university’s legal aid clinic, Klink Bantuan Guaman Universiti Malaya (2022 – 2023), as a student advisor which allowed her to manage client files and provide pro bono legal advice to the community. Owing to her impeccable skills and passion in editing, she joined the University of Malaya Law Review (2020 – 2022) for two tenures. In her first tenure where she held the position of journal editor, she meticulously edited articles for the law review’s academic journal. She then became the Head of Journal Editorial in the subsequent tenure, where she supervised the journal editors in editing articles for the law review. Her experience as a Vice Secretary for the University of Malaya’s Constitutional Team (2020) enabled her to draw up reports and proposals efficiently.

Apart from her active participation in extra-curricular activities, she had also achieved excellent results in her academics, having been awarded the Dean’s List Award on six occasions.

Back in July 2022, she joined Azmi & Associates as a legal intern. During her internship, she gained wide exposure to a plethora of practice areas, be it in corporate or litigation. She had the opportunity to proofread agreements and due diligence reports. She conducted legal research on various matters, among which are licensing matters, tax law, the Euribor settlement, as well as probate and administration. Furthermore, she assisted in drafting cause papers for the purpose of filing bankruptcy and winding up petitions, as well as a letter of demand in relation to trademark infringement.

Mohd Zam Mustaman

Mohd Zam graduated with LL.B (Hons.) from the University of Wales at Cardiff in 1989 and was called to the Malaysian Bar and admitted to the roll of Advocates and Solicitors in 1993.

Mohd Zam has immense experience in the corporate and legal sector. He is also registered as a Licensed Company Secretary (LS 0009020-2006).

Prior to joining Azmi & Associates, Mohd Zam held several top positions in the Johor Corporation Group of Companies:

1. Property Manager of its subsidiary property and facility management company (1984-1987)

2. The General Manager of its Property & Land Division, the Legal & Corporate Affairs Division and the Legal & Corporate Services Division (from 1995 to 2005). He was involved in a number of corporate exercises and strategic projects with the Johor Corporation Group:

(a) Kotaraya Urban Renewal Project;

(b) Pasir Gudang Town Centre Project;

Amir, a law graduate from Universiti Malaya, obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) in 2022.

Before joining Azmi & Associates, he gained in-house experience as a Legal Intern at Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) under the Legal Strategy and Intellectual Property division, where he was actively involved in corporate governance exercises such as preparing legal opinion for the Board of TM, drafting internal policy on Anti-Trust law and ensuring legal compliance related to TM’s intellectual property portfolio. 

In his varsity life, he was actively involved in student activism, both within and beyond his faculty. His engagement extended beyond legal circles, as he actively participated in various non-legal programs with Ombudsman Financial Services (OFS), the Securities Commission (SC), SIDREC, AWAM, and Selangor Freelance. He also took on key leadership roles, serving as the Academic Head of Bureau for the Law Islamic Student Association, Treasurer of the Universiti Malaya Young Leaders Association, and EXCO Kebajikan of Persatuan Mahasiswa Selangor Universiti Malaya.

Muhammad Aqil graduated from Universiti Teknologi MARA with a Second Class (Upper Division) LL.B (Hons) in 2023.

In 2021, he completed his internship at Rithauddeen & Aziz, a legal firm in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Throughout the internship, he was mainly exposed to a variety of conveyancing work. He was trained to prepare the necessary documents for transfers and loans as well as to facilitate the smooth transfer of ownership.

During his varsity day, he was an active student. He was part of the UiTM Law Faculty Sports Club where he was involved in various sports and events in UiTM and in other law schools as well. Further, he is active in volunteer work for the development of local students back in his hometown, Kota Bharu.

Pushpa brings a wealth of experience and academic excellence to her role, having graduated with First Class Honors in LLB from Universiti Malaya in 1985. She furthered her legal education by earning a Master’s degree in law from the prestigious University of Cambridge. Her commitment to continuous learning is evident through her Post Graduate Diploma in Competition Law and Economics for Competition Law from King’s College London.

Pushpa is dedicated to staying at the forefront of industry trends, as reflected in her ongoing certification pursuit in ESG Reporting with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and her completion of a Certificate in The Circular Economy and Sustainability Strategies from the Cambridge University Judge Business School.

Pushpa’s remarkable career trajectory began when she was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1986. She has contributed to various sectors, starting with legal practice at Messrs Zain & Co. Following her early legal career, Pushpa made an impact in academia by teaching at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya. She then transitioned to the corporate world, notably as the first Legal Adviser for Fraser & Neave (M) Sdn Bhd and contributed to the establishment of Maxis and Astro within the Usaha Tegas group.

Her commitment to shaping the telecommunications industry was evident in her role as the first Legal Adviser at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in 1999, where she participated in critical World Trade Organization negotiations. Pushpa later embarked on an international assignment, serving as Director of Licensing at the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where she played a pivotal role in drafting Licensing Regulations and shaping the UAE’s telecommunications landscape.

Upon her return to Malaysia, Pushpa continued to make substantial contributions as an independent consultant in legal and regulatory matters. Concurrently, she pursued her studies in Competition Law at King’s College, London. In 2015, she accepted the role of Director, Regulatory Affairs at Ooredoo Myanmar Limited, a prominent telecom licensee in Myanmar, before eventually returning to Malaysia.

Pushpa’s unique perspective, acquired by her experiences both as a regulator and an operator, led to her appointment as a member of the MCMC in September 2018 where she served for more 2 years, further attesting to her expertise and influence in the field.

Nurliyana was called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn in July 2023, marking the beginning of her legal career.

Nurliyana completed her Bar Training Course at the University of Law, Birmingham where she honed her skills in Legal Research, Opinion Writing, Drafting, Client Conferences, Civil and Criminal Advocacy. She graduated from University of Leicester with LL.B, where she delved into subjects such as Commercial Law, Company Law, International Commercial Arbitration, Internet Law, Intellectual Property and Equity & Trust. She had also participated in Mooting, Negotiation and Client Interviewing competitions.

Throughout her academic career, she excelled in debating, earning the title of Best Speaker in a number of debating competitions. Furthermore, she has assumed leadership positions in various academic and extracurricular societies. Nurliyana has displayed a deep commitment to international affairs by actively engaging in several international Model United Nation conferences, where she had also been awarded as the Distinguished Delegate. Her dedication to community service is evident through her involvement in Amnesty International campaigns too where she was involved in The Museum Without Home and Rise for Rohingya campaigns.

Jasmine Ngu Tzeh Zhen graduated from Cardiff University with a First Class LL.B (Hons) in 2021. She was called to the Bar of England and Wales (Middle Temple) after completing the Barrister Training Course at BPP University, Manchester in 2023.

Prior to commencing her pupillage at Azmi & Associates, she gained valuable legal experience through internships at different firms. During her tenure as a law intern in Shearn Delamore & Co, she was exposed to matters related to Employment Law and Immigration Law. She gained experience in  legal research, drafting legal opinion, as well as drafting both witness statements and warning letters. Furthermore, her internship at Kadir, Wong & Lin Advocates exposed her to conveyancing work. She was tasked with preparing documents for land transfers, from the initial stages to final file closures. She also responded to clients’ enquiries face-to-face, via email communications, and over phone calls.

During her undergraduate studies, she was involved in the Cardiff University Innocence Project, which aimed to help people who claimed to have been wrongfully convicted of a crime. She also actively participated in workshops organized by Middle Temple to enhance her practical skills and knowledge of the law.

Ahmad Iqbal graduated from International Islamic University Malaysia with a First Class in Bachelor of Laws (LLB (Hons)) in 2022. Up until recently, he had just graduated from International Islamic University Malaysia, with a First Class in Bachelor of Laws (Shariah) (LLB(S) (Hons)) in 2023.

He was previously attached to Messrs Sofiah Ariffin & Nor Asma, in his hometown of Alor Setar, Kedah, back in July 2021. During his attachment days, he has experienced several litigations works, ranging from preparation of cause papers, drafting opinions and letters, as well as conducting legal research. He was also involved in conveyancing matters, with trainings on preparation of the legal documents.

He was an active student back in his varsity day. He engaged in IIUM Moots and Client Consultation Club, serving as a board member for two tenures. As an oralist he had partaken in numerous mooting competitions, ranging from international commercial arbitration, like Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and constitutional litigation, such as KL Bar e-Moot Court Competition 2020. He had also acted as student coach for several competitions. Apart from mooting experiences, he had served as a committee member of the Welfare & Spirituality Secretariat of IIUM Law Student Society, and volunteered in edutainment programme for aborigines, organized by Titian Asli Club.

Nur Syahidah Athirah graduated from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) with LL.B (Hons) in 2022 and graduated from the same with LL.B (Shariah) (Hons) in 2023. She completed both with First Class degrees. She was also the award recipient for Best Student in Evidence subject.

Before commencing her pupillage, she has undergone the attachment programme in the Commercial Litigation Department at Hisham Sobri & Kadir during her university days. During her attachment, she had the opportunity to assist the litigation practice group with drafting cause papers, conducting legal researches and producing several write-ups where she was exposed to commercial litigation such as cases involving capital reduction and company winding up.

She was an active student engaging in several leadership roles organized by IIUM such as being the Vice Secretary of the Muslim Youth Legal Interest Group (MYLIG) which is a subsidiary of the Law Students Society of IIUM Law Faculty. The group mainly organised programmes focused to facilitate IIUM law students to be exposed to legal practice.  She was also the Head of Bureau of Sports, Arts and Sustainability Club of the Law Students Society IIUM. She actively volunteered for event involving refugees such as the Rohingya children refugees where she acted in the capacity of the Program Coordinator in coordinating and overseeing the programme.

Abdul Karim Ariez Mohd Nur Harris

Abdul Karim Ariez graduated from Universiti Malaya with a LL.B (Hons) in 2022.

He had the opportunity to undergo an internship with PETRONAS under Group Legal, in Legal Downstream Department and was placed in the Legal Pengerang Integrated Complex division in August 2021. Throughout the internship period, he had the opportunity to assist his supervisor in drafting and reviewing agreements between external parties and subsidiaries, took responsibility for the classification of hundreds of agreements transitioning to LIBOR interest rate, and conducted substantial research on company and criminal law. He was also a paralegal at Mohanadass Partnership in February 2023 where he helped prepare cause papers, assisted the partners in trial and hearing preparation, and conducted substantial research on construction and employment law.

Karim was an active student in both academics and extra-curricular activities. In his second year of studies, he held the position of Head of the Faculty Achievements bureau of UM Law Review – a student-run legal publication body – where he was tasked to interview, write, and edit articles on the achievements of Faculty members and alumni. In addition, he was also the founder and secretary of ECOLAWGY UM where he helped organised environment-related programs inside and outside of the Faculty.

Karim was also an active volunteer outside the varsity, having volunteered with Rumah Kita, which provides temporary housing, nourishment, pre- and post-natal care for young women, and also taught in the Chin Student Organisation, a school for the Chin community. 

His field of interest is in Corporate and Commercial Law. He intends to strengthen his knowledge on these matters and continue to venture into the realms of corporate practice in the future.
