Key Amendments under the Patents (Amendment) Act 2022

The Patents (Amendment) Bill 2021, which was passed by both the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara in December 2021, brings about significant changes to the existing Patents Act 1983 (“Act”). The amendments have been incorporated into the Patents (Amendment) Act 2022 (“Amendment Act”), officially gazetted on 16 March 2022 and came into force on 18 March 2022. The purpose of the Amendment Act is to align our country’s patent laws with current international standards and developments in patent protection. These amendments aim to provide improved protection and cater to the needs of the patent community, trade and interested parties.
