Elevation of Mohd Zam Mustaman to Partner at Azmi & Associates

Azmi & Associates takes immense pleasure in announcing the appointment of Mohd Zam Mustaman as the 23rd Partner of the Firm, effective from October 16, 2023.

Zam Mustaman’s ascension to the prestigious position of Partner is a resounding testament to his unwavering dedication and remarkable achievements in the field of law. His academic foundation, which includes a Degree in Estate Management and a Diploma in Valuation from UTM in 1980 and 1982, provided him with a solid educational base upon which he has meticulously built his illustrious career.

Following the completion of his academic journey, Zam Mustaman embarked on a distinguished career path, where he assumed notable roles at JCorp. His tenure at JCorp saw him rise to various senior positions, ultimately culminating in his appointment as the Head of the Legal Department. His exceptional contributions to the organization paved the way for further academic pursuits abroad, resulting in the attainment of an LL.B (Hons.) degree from the University of Wales, Cardiff, in 1989. His formal induction into the Malaysian Bar in April 1993 marked the official commencement of his illustrious legal career.

In addition to his remarkable academic and professional accomplishments, Zam Mustaman maintains a profound connection with his alma mater, the prestigious full boarding school of Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK/MCOBA), where he is a distinguished alumnus of the Class of 1976. Notably, he holds the distinguished title of a retired senior counsel, having diligently served in various government and state government-linked corporations for nearly three decades. His extensive in-house counsel experience includes pivotal roles at Johor Corporation (JCorp) and the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

Following his retirement from public service, Zam Mustaman embarked on a new chapter in his legal career by joining Azmi & Associates as Senior Associate 1 in August 2020. Leveraging his extensive network of corporate connections, he has been instrumental in opening doors for the Firm to cultivate and strengthen relationships with numerous organizations.

During his tenure with the JCorp Group and later with IRDA, he had held directorship positions at several key companies in Malaysia, Indonesia and India which included, amongst others, the Johor Land Berhad, KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Bhd, Damansara Realty Berhad, Al Aqar REIT Berhad, EPA Plantation SDN Bhd, Harta Consult SDN Bhd (the predecessor of current Damansara Assets SDN Bhd), IM BRT SDN Bhd (at IRDA) and various other companies.

Zam Mustaman’s reputation for independence, legal prowess, and industry expertise is further amplified by his extensive and invaluable business network, encompassing entities such as KPRJ, Iskandar Development, and other key players in Johor. He currently oversees the Johor Bahru 2 Practice Group within Azmi & Associates’s Johor Bahru branch, which stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to regional presence. His elevation to Partner will undoubtedly propel the growth and strength of the JB 2 Unit.

During his tenure with us so far, he has also executed together with the MAC4 team, assignments of prestigious value, involving several jetty re-development projects in Perak and Perlis for the Government of Malaysia where we acted as legal adviser working with one of the big 4 accounting firms.

His appointment undoubtedly adds depth and strength to our Johor Bahru Office and is expected to boost and further enhance corporate and commercial collaboration with corporate bodies especially with his MCOBA members counterparts who currently occupy leadership positions in many major corporations in Malaysia.
