His background includes a significant role as an in-house legal advisor specialising in upstream operations for PETRONAS, as well as contributions to key national projects, including many PSCs, MTJA, NGPSA gas development project. Dato’ Azmi’s impressive track record extends to his involvement as a member of the Merger Integration Committee of Synergy Drive Sdn Bhd in 2007, overseeing the largest corporate merger in Malaysian history. His representation of Malaysian companies in cross-border transactions has spanned multiple countries, showcasing his global expertise.
Notable awards received by Dato’ Azmi include Asian Legal Business 2024 Dealmaker of the Year, The Legal 500 Hall of Fame for Malaysia in Corporate and M&A (2020-2024), Asia Business Law Journal’s A-List of the 100 Top Lawyers in Malaysia (2024, 2022 & 2020), AsiaLaw’s Distinguished M&A Practitioner (2023, 2021 & 2020), and other prestigious recognitions.
Under his guidance, Azmi & Associates has grown into one of Malaysia’s largest law firms, known for its size (of around 100 lawyers) and unwavering commitment to excellence, reflecting his leadership and vision.
Currently, he is a director of S P Setia Berhad, Pelaburan Hartanah Berhad, Sapura Energy Berhad, and Worldwide Holdings Berhad.
On the legal industry front, Dato’ Azmi also serves as a director of TerraLex, a global network with over 30 years of experience, connecting over 23,000 lawyers from reputable independent law firms worldwide. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Law School of University Utara Malaysia. He is also one of the 16 elected Bar Counsellors for the last 2 terms, 2023-2025.
