Azmi & Associates Appoints a New Director/Senior Associate – Pushpa Nair

Azmi & Associates is pleased to announce a new senior member to our team, Pushpa Nair, as our new Director/Senior Associate.

She brings to the Firm her extensive experience encompassing Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG“), Technology, Media & Telecommunication (“TMT“), and Commercial effective from 2 October 2023.

Pushpa Nair is a seasoned legal professional with a wealth of experience in these dynamic sectors, and her expertise will be instrumental in guiding our Firm and clients through the intricacies of ESG compliance, technology trends, media strategies, telecommunications advancements, and corporate governance.

Pushpa graduated with First Class Honors in LLB from Universiti Malaya in 1985. She furthered her legal education by earning a Master’s degree in law from the prestigious University of Cambridge in 1988 Her commitment to continuous learning is evident through her Post Graduate Diploma in Competition Law and Economics for Competition Law from King’s College London in 20010 and 2012 respectively.

Pushpa is dedicated to staying at the forefront of industry trends, as reflected in her being certified as a Sustainability Professional with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and her completion of a Certificate in The Circular Economy and Sustainability Strategies from Cambridge University Judge Business School.

Pushpa’s remarkable career trajectory began when she was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1986. She has contributed to various sectors, starting with legal practice at Messrs Zain & Co. Following her early legal career, Pushpa made an impact in academia by teaching at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya. She then transitioned to the corporate world, notably as the first Legal Adviser for Fraser & Neave (M) Sdn Bhd and contributed to the establishment of Maxis and Astro within the Usaha Tegas group.

Her commitment to shaping the telecommunications industry was evident in her role as the first Legal Adviser at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in 1999, where she participated in critical World Trade Organization negotiations. Pushpa later embarked on an international assignment, serving as Director of Licensing at the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where she played a pivotal role in drafting Licensing Regulations and shaping the UAE’s telecommunications landscape.

Upon her return to Malaysia, Pushpa continued to make substantial contributions as an independent consultant in legal and regulatory matters. Concurrently, she pursued her studies in Competition Law at King’s College, London. In 2015, she accepted the role of Director, Regulatory Affairs at Ooredoo Myanmar Limited, a prominent telecom licensee in Myanmar, before eventually returning to Malaysia.

Pushpa’s unique perspective, acquired by her experiences both as a regulator and an operator, led to her appointment as a member of the MCMC in September 2018 where she served for almost 2 years, further attesting to her expertise and influence in the field.

As the Malaysia’s corporate sector continues to navigate the evolving landscapes of ESG, and Corporate Governance, we are confident that Pushpa will play a pivotal role in helping us achieve our goals and provide top-tier legal advisory services to our clients.
