Iris Tang graduated from Northumbria University with a First Class LL.B (Hons) in 2013. She subsequently obtained the Certificate of Legal Practice in 2014 and began her pupillage with Zul Rafique & Partners. She was then called to the Malaysian Bar and admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor in 2015.
Prior to joining Azmi & Associates in January 2022, Iris was a Senior Associate in the Restructuring & Insolvency Practice Group at Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill in 2019. She has also served as an associate in the Dispute Resolution Practice Group of Skrine in 2016.
Iris’ primary area of practice is corporate and commercial litigation, with a focus on banking and insolvency related matters. Since 2016, Iris has acted for insolvency practitioners in a variety of highly contentious insolvency disputes and advised clients on a range of insolvency matters. She also advised and represented financial institutions and accounting firms in receivership matters, debt recovery, bankruptcy and winding-up proceedings. Iris also has experience in highly contentious disputes on novel points of law that have become landmark Federal Court decisions.
During the tenure of her career, Iris has acted as counsel or co-counsel in amongst others, the following cases: –
⊕ Advised and acted for liquidators in the largest Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation in Malaysia in terms of the liabilities involved which came up to approximately RM5.2 billion
⊕ Advised and acted for the liquidator of a wound-up developer in defending claims by purchasers and contractors for delivery of vacant possession and a claim for liquidated ascertained damages
⊕ Advised and acted for the liquidator of a wound-up developer in filing an application to examine the past and present officers of the company concerning its trade affairs and dealings
⊕ Advised and acted for the liquidator in applications for leave to dispose of assets of a wound-up company in Sabah and advised them on an application to remove collector’s caveats
⊕ Advised and acted as counsel for appeals at the High Court level
⊕ Advised and acted as counsel for various contentious insolvency matters in the Winding-up Court, including opposing applications for leave to commence proceedings against wound-up companies and applications against rejection of proof of debt by liquidator
⊕ Advised and acted as counsel for various contentious foreclosure proceedings and auction matters
⊕ Advised and acted as counsel for financial institutions in debt recovery matters, contentious winding-up petitions and bankruptcy proceedings
⊕ Advised and acted as co-counsel in trials involving claims for liquidated ascertained damages
⊕ Advised and acted for a wound-up parent company to wind-up its subsidiaries in Labuan
⊕ Advised and acted as co-counsel in successfully opposing an application for extension of a judicial management Order granted in favour of an entity in the public infrastructure industry
⊕ Advised and acted for liquidators in seeking an interim injunction to restrain a call on bank guarantees
⊕ Advised various receivers and managers in receivership of companies and sale of assets, including providing advice on the validity of their appointment by the banks
⊕ Acted as co-counsel in trials for suits filed against receivers and managers of companies for purported wrongful termination of assets sale agreements
