1 Day Seminar @ Element Hotel

In an effort to share our knowledge and educate the corporate world on the updates of the legal world, Kuala Lumpur Business and Legal Institute in conjunction with Azmi & Associates hosted a 1-Day Seminar for in-house counsels and young lawyers on the topics of Compliance, Anti-corruption, Dispute Resolution and Strategic Litigation.

There was a total of five sessions spread throughout the day with sessions led by our Senior Partner, Dato Azmi Mohd Ali, Partner, Norhisham Abd Bahrin, the former Company Secretary of Nestle Malaysia Singapore, Mohd Shah Hassan.

The remaining sessions were led by Clive Thorne and John Vercoe, Partners McCarthy Denning, a London based law firm. Insights were given into company law in the UK as well as corporate compliance that should be adopted by companies in today’s day and age. The participants were also given the opportunity to address whatever questions during the sessions.

   

Visit by Myanmar Oil and Gas Services Society (MOGSS)

Following Azmi & Associates’ visit to Myanmar in early September 2019, the Firm was privileged to have hosted a dinner for the Council of the Myanmar Oil and Gas Services Society in late September 2019. The dinner was held at the Royal Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The delegates from MOGSS who visited Kuala Lumpur were:

  • Mr. Ken Tun, Chairman of MOGSS. Mr. Ken Tun is also the CEO of Parami Energy, Myanmar;
  • Dr. Aung Kyaw Htoo, Vice Chairman of MOGSS and Managing Director of DARE Company;
  • Mr. Aung Ye Soe, Secretary General of MOGSS and Managing Director of Machinery and Solutions Co. Ltd.;
  • Dr. Zaw Naing, Joint Auditor of MOGSS and Managing Director of Mandalay Technology Co. Ltd.;

Azmi & Associates Expands Its Operation in Johor Bahru

Azmi & Associates has now expanded its operations in Johor Bahru. This strategic expansion stems from the Firm’s intention to better service its local clients and fraternity.

The JB office first opened its doors in 2003 with the humble office consisting of 2 lawyers. It then relocated in 2006 to Menara KOMTAR in the JB City Centre.

By 2015, the office consisted of 2 support staff and then Senior Associate, Syed Muhammad Ridza Syed Abdullah, who is in the process of being elevated to become Partner.

In July, the JB office moved into a bigger and better equipped office space, measuring more than 2000 square feet and made new additions to its team.

Azmi & Associates Visits Yangon

On the 4th to 6th September 2019, a team comprising of Senior Partner, Dato’ Azmi Mohd Ali together with two lawyers, Nazran Arvind and Hassan Shah travelled to Yangon, Myanmar to meet up with several businesses and law firms.

The visit is part of the firm’s effort to broaden our horizon and to strengthen the synergy between our firm and the businesses and law firms in Myanmar, as well as to explore opportunities in Myanmar given the opening of its market.

The trip to Yangon started off with a visit to BDO Consulting Myanmar where the team was well received by Mr. Joe Yew, Executive Director, Ms. Khin Chan Myae and Ms. Hong Shi Ying.

Talk on Board of Director in Brunei

Our Senior Partner, Dato’ Azmi Mohd Ali was invited on 21 August 2019 to be part of the panellist for the Director’s Forum on “Board’s Roles and Responsibilities: Moving Forward”. The Forum was jointly organised by the Centre For Islamic Banking, Finance and Management (CIBFM) and Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC) Malaysia, at the Radisson Hotel, Brunei Darussalam.

Other than Dato’ Azmi, the speakers included in the forum are the Associate Professor Mak Yuen Teen of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School, Singapore, Managing Director and CEO of DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) Javed Ahmed and member of the Governing Council of the Singapore Institute of Directors, Philip Forrest. Under the theme ‘Guiding Companies Through New Challenges’, the forum witnessed an audience of board members, corporate secretaries, CEOs, and other C-Suite executives who were eager to learn more from local and international speakers with vast experience. Some of the topics discussed were ‘Board’s Roles and Responsibilities: Moving Forward’, ‘Blind spots in Decision Making’, ‘Navigating New Age Risks’, and ‘Financial Matters: Heeding Red Flags and Avoiding Common Pitfalls’.

Azmi & Associates Received a Visit from ALSA Indonesia

On 31st July, Azmi & Associates were pleased to receive students from Universitas Hasanuddin (Makassar), Indonesia. The visit was part of a 5-days ALSA Legal Visit, which is used as a means of adding information, legal insights and developing mindsets. Azmi & Associates were the only law firm that received a visit from ALSA Indonesia. At Azmi & Associates, we strongly believe in training young and aspiring lawyers in order to help them achieve their potential. We do so by giving them insights into real world issues and practical life guidance as we believe that these suitably supplements their learnings in university.

The visit was split in into three sessions, the first sessions led by our Senior Partner, who gave insights on the workings of the global market beyond the legal sector.

The second and third sessions were held by our Partner, Norhisham Abd Bahrin and our Senior Associate, Hassan Shah.

   

HR APAC Conference 2019 in Singapore

Since 2014, Azmi & Associates has been a member of the ASEAN Plus Group (“APG”) Partners. ASEAN Plus members hail from eight jurisdictions, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, with few other jurisdictions coming on board later.

The Firm has always embraced globalisation in its practices, our participation in Terralex Network, First Law International (“FLI”) network and Islamic Finance Network (“ISFIN”) is a clear manifestation of our globalised practice. The ASEAN Plus initiative will enable the member firms to offer clients a more tightly integrated service in multi-jurisdictional matters involving the respective laws of each jurisdiction.

RHTLaw Taylor Wessing (Singapore), a member of the ASEAN Plus Initiative in conjunction with the APAC HR Employment Law Congress 2019, has invited our Partner, Melinda Marie D'Angelus again as one of the speakers for this year’s congress. The event took place at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel from 6th to 7th June 2019.

2019 Asean IPA Annual Conference at Shangri-la Hotel Singapore

Intellectual property practitioners of South East Asia (“ASEAN”) countries have again, gathered, this time, for the 2019 ASEAN Intellectual Property Association (“ASEAN IPA”) Annual Conference (“the Conference”). This year, our neighbouring country, Singapore, was selected as the venue of the Conference which was held from 26-27 April 2019 in Shangri-La Hotel.

Azmi & Associates, as a member of ASEAN IPA, had sent two of its intellectual property lawyers, Azarith Sofia Aziz and Amera Mohd Yusof (“the Delegates”), to participate. The Conference, which was attended by over a hundred participants from more than ten countries was fully occupied with informative sessions covering wide areas of intellectual property laws with emphasis on this year’s theme, “Tech, Trade and Transformation – ASEAN’s Future”. This year’s event was also graced by Mr. Soh Kar Liang, the Singapore Country Head.

TerraLex Global Meeting 2019

The TerraLex Global Meeting 2019 was hosted by Azmi & Associates from 10 April 2019 to 13 April 2019, a 4-day event held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. This was the first ever TerraLex Global Meeting hosted in Malaysia. We, Azmi & Associates, have been the sole member of TerraLex for Malaysia since 2001.

TerraLex is a Florida based, second largest global international network of law firms comprising 19,000 attorneys in more than 150 top Law Firms located in 100 countries covering Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, USA, Canada, South America, Africa and the Caribbean. The mission of TerraLex is to serve clients’ legal needs and business interests through a worldwide network of quality Law Firms that meets high professional standards.

Azmi & Associates hosted the previous TerraLex Regional Meetings on two occasions, in 2008 as well as in 2018, in Kuala Lumpur. This year, our Firm was trusted to become the host of the Global Meeting. It was indeed our pleasure to have carried out the trust and responsibility of hosting the TerraLex Global Meeting 2019.
